Mangaluru college in heritage scheme

July 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:04 am IST - BENGALURU:

Only one college in Karnataka has been chosen for the ‘special heritage status’ scheme by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

University College, Mangaluru, will now receive a funding of Rs. 1.83 crore. The amount is expected to be used for the restoration of Ravindra Kala Bhavan.

Rich history

The college, which started off as a Provincial School in 1824, was among the 19 others chosen by the UGC.

Two other colleges from the State which had applied for assistance under the scheme did not qualify. These include St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, and St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. On the rejection of the two colleges, of the 41 that failed to make the cut, a UGC notification said the “proposal did not qualify for financial assistance under the present scheme.”
