Congress seeks apology from Shah

The Congress on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of lowering the quality of political discourse with comments like “Sonia Gandhi was the only other woman Manmohan Singh spoke to as Prime Minister apart from his wife.”

On Sunday, BJP president Amit Shah had made this comment while addressing an election rally at Jalna in Maharashtra. Demanding an apology from Mr. Shah for the remark, Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza said such statements were a reflection of BJP's mindset.

Mr. Shah made these remarks while trying to draw a distinction between the “maun” (silent) Dr. Singh and his “articulate” successor Narendra Modi. “Mr. Shah has insulted not just Mr. Singh but the women of India with this remark,” Ms. Oza added.
