Lok Sabha was adjourned briefly on Tuesday after the Opposition benches protested and sought a clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on J&K Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed's controversial remarks on assembly elections there.
Even as the government said it does not endorse the Mr. Sayeed's statement that thanked the Hurriyat, militant outfits and people from 'across the border' for allowing conducive atmosphere for the polls, the Opposition disrupted the proceedings and demanded a clarification from the Prime Minister.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said there is no question of welcoming such remarks and no question of endorsing the Chief Minister's statement, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu also said what the "Home Minister has said is the sense of the House”, but the Opposition benches were unrelenting.
The Opposition MPs disrupted the Question Hour, forcing Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the proceedings twice for brief periods in quick succession.
Speaking on the issue, Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress) said the topic was sensitive as the Home Minister had informed the House yesterday that the Prime Minister was not told by Mr. Sayeed about his views on the smooth conduct of polls, even as the Chief Minister had claimed he had spoken to Modi on the issue.
Congress' Deepender Hooda said distancing from Mr. Sayeed's remarks is not enough and the House must pass a resolution condemning the statement of the J&K Chief Minister. Members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress, the Left, JD(U) and RJD rushed in to the well of the House, raising slogans.
