The 80th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan passed six resolutions at an open session here on Thursday, the last day of the three-day event, including an appeal to the State government to initiate steps to reject the K. Kasturirangan Committee report on saving the Western Ghats in Kodagu.
The report should be rejected as it would affect the livelihood of the people of Kodagu, T.P. Ramesh, president of the Kodagu district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, proposed, while Rohidas Naik, president of the Uttara Kananda district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, seconded it.
Another resolution stated that the government, through the Department of Education, should enforce the singing of the “nada geethe” (Kuvempu’s Jaya bharata jananiya tanujate ) in private and English-medium schools. The resolution was proposed by president of the Gadag Kannada Sahitya Parishat Kuribasappa Maribasappa, while it was seconded by president of the Chikmagalur Kannada Sahitya Parishat N.S. Shivaswamy.
Welcoming the statements of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that Kannada schools in border areas would not be closed down, another resolution urged the government to take steps to supply textbooks to students in those schools in time. Students in those schools should be given the benefit of educational tours. The resolution was moved by president of the Mandya Kannada Sahitya Parishat Meera Shivalingaiah and seconded by president of the Bidar Kannada Sahitya Parishat Siddramappa Masimaade.
Another resolution passed by the sammelan urged the government to ensure that all proceedings in the High Court of Karnataka were in Kannada. The State legislature should pass a resolution on this. The State governments of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan had adopted Hindi. The Tamil Nadu legislature had decided to implement Tamil, it said.
Shimoga Kannada Sahitya Parishat president D. Manjunath moved the resolution and president of the Udupi Kannada Sahitya Parishat Neelavara Surendra Adiga seconded it.
The other resolution passed stated that disciplinary action should be initiated against the two Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti MLAs Sambaji Patil and Arvind Patil who had spoken against Karnataka and its people allegedly in a derogatory manner. The sammelan also condemned the statements of the former Minister Umesh Katti who had allegedly spoken about a demand for statehood for north Karnataka.
T. Thimmesh, president of the Bangalore City Kannada Sahitya Parishat moved the resolution and B.T. Lalitha Naik, member of the executive committee of the Central Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore, seconded it.
The sammelan also passed a resolution thanking the reception committee and others. Central Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pundalika Halambi proposed the resolution and president of the Tumkur Kannada Sahitya Parishat Bhaskarachar seconded it.
