The tiger population in Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary has gone up from five to six, after one tiger was captured near Mullayanagiri Hills of Chikkaballapura taluk and subsequently released in the sanctuary, near Talawade village of Khanapur taluk on Wednesday.

Assistant Conservator of Forests Prashanth P.K.M. told The Hindu here on Sunday that there were at least five tigers in the BWS and adjoining areas. In addition, there were around 30 to 35 leopards in BWS and adjoining forest ranges of Khanapur taluk.

Meanwhile, Mr. Prashanth confirmed that the calf of the cow captured from Degaon village on Friday night was caught by a tiger and not a leopard, as was suspected initially. Some of the villagers said they had also seen a radio collar around the neck of the tiger.
