Steps to check spurious liquor sale during Onam

August 29, 2014 10:52 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:40 pm IST - Kozhikode:

The Excise Department has envisaged an action plan to prevent the brewing and sale of spurious liquor in the district during the Onam season. A 24-hour striking force, a border patrolling unit, and a shadow wing to collect intelligence input have already started functioning in the district.

Vehicle checking during night hours would be intensified, official sources said here on Thursday.

Additional personnel had been deployed at the Azhiyoor check-post to prevent the smuggling of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from the Union Territory of Mahe. A crisis management team had been constituted to meet any eventuality. Samples from toddy shops would be collected for chemical analysis.

Excise officials carried out 270 raids in the district from August 12. As many as 30 persons were arrested in connection with 25 abkari cases and nine drug cases. Seventeen litres of arrack, 61 litres of IMFL, 6 kg ganja, 38 gm of opium and 1, 260 litres of wash were seized during the raids, they said.

The Excise Department has urged the public to pass on any information related to illegal liquor sale to its round-the-clock control rooms. The district control room number is 0495-2372927; Kozhikode: 0495-2376762; Vadakara; 0496-2515082; and Perambra: 0496-2610410.
