Resentment in BJP over tie-up with Sena

BJP cadres fear that realigning with the Sena will block their aspirations of growth in Maharashtra

October 26, 2014 12:00 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:16 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Even as backchannel talks are on between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena for government formation in Maharashtra, a section of the State BJP leadership seems to be opposed to the prospect of a reunion with the party’s estranged ally.

There also seems to be resentment among the BJP cadre, which fears that realigning with the Sena will block their aspirations of growth in the State.

Owing to its alliance with the Sena, the BJP was restricted to contesting only 119 of the 288 seats in the Assembly.

‘Purpose will be lost’

“If we go back to them, our purpose of going alone is lost. We will be giving a new life to the Sena. Why would we want to do that,” a senior leader said.

Ringing alarm bells for the Sena, the leader said: “Most probably we will form our government, with the help of Independents.”

Minority govt.

The leader did not rule out the possibility of the BJP forming a minority government and later prove its majority in the Assembly.

The BJP is aiming to spread its wings in the State, where its growth was restricted by the alliance.

The party aims to increase the number of offices and cadre strength after forming the government.
