Sena loses patience

A minority government is unconstitutional and is akin to enjoying power without responsibility, says the party

At the end of its tether, after being put on hold by the BJP on whether or not it would part of its government, the Shiv Sena has questioned the legitimacy of running a minority government.

An editorial in the party mouth-piece Saamna said that a minority government is akin to enjoying power without responsibility.

Coming at a juncture when both the BJP and Sena claim to be in talks on participation of the latter in the government, it is a clear sign of growing exasperation of the latter.

With the swearing-in-ceremony of the first BJP government scheduled for tomorrow evening, the Sena wants to be part of the ministry.

“The major challenge in front of Devendra Fadnavis is to prove majority in the state assembly. The stand of forming and running a minority government may seem fine at present. But to enjoy power with such government is against the Constitution,” said an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna.

The Sena from last few days is putting all its efforts to convince the BJP leadership to accept its demand of ministerial posts, in return of its support to the new government. However, the BJP has so far not responded to its formal proposal.

The BJP, which has 122 MLAs and is short of 23 to prove majority in the state assembly, has indicated that it is ready to form a minority government.

The Sena on Wednesday evening held a meeting of its senior leaders at the residence of party president Uddhav Thackeray to take stock of the situation. The party will announce its position on Thursday.

Questioning the morality of the BJP over the issue of support extended by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the editorial said the people in this state voted to bury the corrupt government of the Congress and the NCP. “But NCP played a spoilsport on the very first day by announcing the support. If this is going to give to strength, then let’s stop the entire topic right here right now,” said the editorial.

Sharad Pawar-led NCP has already announced its unconditional outside support to the BJP. Mr. Pawar has even said that his MLAs in the state assembly will abstain from voting if BJP seeks trust vote.

The editorial said that Mr. Fadnavis hails from Vidarbha region. “The NCP is accused of corruption cases in irrigation projects of Vidarbha. Will your government run on the support given by the NCP? You are in power today because you promised a corruption-free and Congress-free Maharashtra. The questions over you righteousness have already been raised,” said the editorial.

Reiterating the party’s stand on united Maharashtra, the Sena mouthpiece said that Mr. Fadnavis has the responsibility to take Vidarbha on the path of development. “Vidarbha is the land of black gold, the coal. The owners of these mines hate Maharashtra. These handfuls of traders and moneylenders seek separate Vidarbha, the people will not benefit from it,” it said.
