Six residents, including a seven year-old boy, were killed and 15 others injured when a two-storey residential building collapsed in Cholegaon in Thakurli suburb of Thane after heavy rains lashed the area on Tuesday night.

The fire brigade and emergency response teams rushed to the spot but rains hampered the rescue operation on Tuesday night. The injured were admitted to Shastri Nagar and AIMS Hospitals in Dombivli. Some in serious condition were admitted at Sion hospital in Mumbai.

Matruchaya building caved in shortly before midnight, trapping about 20 people under the debris.

Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde, and Collector Dr Ashwini Joshi visited the crash site and monitored the operation. National Disaster Relief Force team of 50 jawans along with Fire Brigade and civil hospital staff are involved in the rescue operation amidst continuous rain.
