Former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran said here on Saturday that he was ready for an open debate with auditor S. Gurumurthy on the BSNL telephone exchange case if the latter proved his allegations.

In a statement here, Mr. Maran said he would quit politics if Mr. Gurumurthy proved that 300 telephone lines could be operated simultaneously in an “ISDN PRI (primary rate interface) line.”

Mr. Maran said if he had used a telephone for Rs. 400 crore, then it would have been recorded in the meter at the telephone exchange. “He should show the meter reading of the telephone used by me,” Mr. Maran said. “After proving both, Mr. Gurumurthy can announce the date and time for the debate. I am ready to participate,” Mr. Maran said.

On Friday, Mr. Gurumurthy challenged Mr. Maran to an open debate on the case being investigated by the CBI in which three persons, including Mr. Maran’s former Additional Private Secretary, were arrested a couple of days ago.
