Government tailors expectations while showcasing a year in office

The Modi government on Monday unveiled a series of multi-media exhibitions showcasing ‘achievements’ of its first year in office with a slight tweaking of the BJP’s election catchphrase “achhe din aane wale hai’’ (good days are coming) to “achhe din ki aur agrasar’’ (en route to good days).

Mounted by the Directorate of Advertising & Visual Publicity (DAVP), the first of the multi-media exhibitions – ‘Saal Ek, Shuruaat Anek’ (Year One, Many beginnings) — was inaugurated by Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts here.

Providing details about the nation-wide exercise, Mr. Jaitley said 60 static multi-media exhibitions would be organised in two phases across the country till June 13. In addition, 345 mobile exhibition vans would be deployed to take the showcase of the government’s policies and achievements beyond the cities.

Kisan channel He also announced that the Kisan Channel – announced in the 2014-15 Budget – would be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday when his government technically completes a year . The exhibition – which has a cut-out of Mr. Modi delivering his first Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort at the entrance and runs recordings of his speeches non-stop – has categorised the government’s initiatives in 19 segments; each titled in either Sanskrit or Sanskritised Hindi.

Farmers’ welfare has been titled ‘Annadata Sukhi Bhava’, mainstreaming the deprived ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’, ensuring dignity of labour ‘Shrameva Jayate’, health assurance for all ‘Sarve Santu Niramayah’, leaving behind a better planet ‘Dharti ki Dharohar’, development of the North East ‘Ashtalakshmi’, power (electricity) for all ‘Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya…’

This slight tweaking of its election slogan a year down the line by the government signals a scaling down of expectations in the wake of repeated questions on “where are the promised good days’’ from the Opposition. After going to the polls with the “achhe din aane wale hain’’ slogan, it was reworked to “achhe din aa gaye hain’’ (good days are here) when the BJP won a clear majority in the Lok Sabha last year.
