Not averse to allying with Cong. on issue of democracy: Yechury

While endorsing the Central Committee’s stand that the electoral tie up with Congress in West Bengal was not in consonance with political tactical line adopted at the last party Congress, CPI (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said that the party was not averse to have joint movement with the Congress on the issue of democracy.

“It has been settled within the party what the Central Committee has said. Against the murder of democracy [in Bengal], our objective is to build the broadest possible people’s resistance and includes all those who are willing to come in and fight, including the Congress,” Mr. Yechury in reply to media queries on whether the party would continue to jointly agitate with the Congress against the Trinamool.

The remarks by CPI(M) State secretary are crucial as only days ago the CPI(M) publicly censured its legislator Tanmoy Bhattacharya for participating in a Congress called rally against price rise in the city.

Mr. Yechury said that as decided by the Central Committee rectification of violation of party’s stand would be taken forward by the Polit Bureau in consultation with State leadership

“The State Committee meeting has been fixed on July 10, we will sit and decide. After all, Bengal is the most important unit for the CPI(M) in India. Anything that needs to be rectified here, will be done, the process has begun,” he said.
