Rajasthan coop official, family sentenced in graft case

December 22, 2014 12:01 am | Updated 12:01 am IST - AJMER:

The former deputy manager of Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation, Surendra Sharma, and his entire family were sentenced to six years imprisonment and fined Rs. 25 lakh each on charges of corruption and amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Surendra Sharma, his wife Aruna and two children Gaurav (26) and Garima (24) will spend one more year in jail in case of defaulting on the fine. The court also ordered the family to deposit Rs 2.5 crore and all the gold and silver recovered from them during raids in the government treasury.

It is, perhaps, the first time that a court has sent family members to jail for abetting the head of the family in corruption, though the primary case was against Surender Sharma. Mr. Sharma is said to have made money by taking commission on each truck of fodder sent to the villages.
