Paying tributes to the mortal remains of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri wanted the government to establish a science university in the name of the late President.
Speaking to reporters, he said that Mr. Kalam had set a trend by leading a simple life even as the President in the Rashtrapathi Bhavan. “From the fact that he was fondly called as People’s President, one can imagine his love and affection for the common man,” he noted and urged the Union government to establish a central science varsity in the name of Mr. Kalam in his hometown, which would be a fitting tribute.
The simple and unassuming characters attracted many irrespective of the age, class and creed. In the passing away, the country had indeed, lost a noble son of the soil, he noted.
Mr. Alagiri, who was removed from the DMK after his anti-party acts during the Lok Sabha election last year, had avoided media persons since then.
