AAP not to contest Haryana polls

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will not contest the Haryana Assembly elections due later this year. This was decided at the State executive commitee meeting in Karnal on Tuesday.

This decision has been taken despite volunteers from all districts and the party's Haryana unit leaders being in favour of contesting the elections. This had also been conveyed to the party's central executive committee earlier this month.

However party spokesman Rajeev Godara said here that “The national executive, as also its convener Arvind Kejriwal, are not in favour of contesting the elections because they feel that at this time the party should concentrate its energies on the Delhi Assembly electiona.”

According to a resolution passed at today's meeting, “When the central leadership is not in favour of contesting elections, it is incumbent on the State unit to respect their judgement.”

Soon after the Delhi Assembly elections in December last year, AAP had indicated that Haryana would be its next destination where it received tremendous support from the masses. However, it did not win even one seat from Haryana in the Lok Sabha elections that followed in April, putting a question mark on its future electoral prospects.
