Man accused of 9-year-old’s rape and murder beaten to death in West Bengal

Father alleges rape and murder as body of missing 9-year-old found hanging from a tree; one of the three accused dies as villagers attack them and burn their house

Raising the spectre of the Badaun rape-murder horror in West Bengal, the body of a nine-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree at Rajnagar village under Nandakumar police station in the Purba Medinipur district.

“The father of the girl who went missing yesterday lodged a complaint at the local police station on against three persons on Thursday,” Purba Medinipur SP Sukesh Jain told The Hindu . A case of rape and murder has been filed, police said.

Before the police could intervene the villagers attacked and severely beat up the three accused and burnt their house.

“Of the three accused one has already died after the beating. We have rescued the other two and admitted them in a local hospital,” Mr. Jain said, adding that they been taken in police custody.

The locals claimed that the body was hung from a tree and when the villagers saw it in the morning they erupted in anger.

Mr. Jain said that the body had already been brought down when police reached the spot in the morning. He added that the village is 15 km away from the police station. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
