The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus in Varanasi continue to remain tense on Saturday following two days of violence and arson allegedly by students.
Students burnt a couple of vehicles and clashed with the police demanding restoration of students’ union.
Meanwhile, over two dozen students and a faculty member have been suspended by BHU vice-chancellor besides ordering an inquiry into the incident by a retired judge.
The BHU administration had appointed a new chief procter after the previous procter resigned apparently over differences with the senior administrative officials over the issue of students’ union polls. Sources said while the procter had sought students’ council polls postponed till the matter was resolved, the BHU administration wanted to go ahead with it, which resulted in students who had been agitating on the issue resorting to violence.
