A web portal that will contain digitised content from museums across the country was launched on Tuesday by Shripad Naik, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism.

The Ministry of Culture plans to digitise the collections of all museums under its control as well as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

In the first phase of the project, collections from 10 museums have been digitised. Other collections will be digitised in phases and made available for online viewing over a period of three to four years.

The endeavour is expected to help scholars and school students, as well as a general audience by providing glimpses of rich collections, hitherto hidden from the public eye.

The portal is also expected to give an impetus to tourism in the country, by encouraging people to visit museums.

Digitisation is done using the Jatan Collection Management Software.

The software and the web portal have been developed by Centre of Development of Advanced Computing, Pune, said a release from the Press Information Bureau on Tuesday.
