Warrant against Srinagar police officer

July 31, 2016 02:12 am | Updated 02:12 am IST - Srinagar:

A court here on Saturday reprimanded the police for failing to lodge an FIR against a police officer accused of “cold-blooded murder”, and issued a non-bailable warrant against the Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, for not obeying the court order.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Masarat Shaheen had directed lodging of an FIR against a Deputy Superintendent of Police, for allegedly “killing a youth outside his house on July 10 by opening fire from his personal pistol after the victim objected to the thrashing of his mother and father” in Srinagar’s Batamaloo area.

Violation of order

With the police failing to lodge an FIR despite court orders and instead lodging FIR against protests, the magistrate issued a non-bailable warrant against the SSP.

She directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Central Kashmir, to execute the order.

Plea rejected

The court also rejected the application on behalf of the SSP seeking exemption from personal appearance. A compliance report has been sought within two days.

DSP Yasir Qadri is accused “firing at the youth not involved in any protests”.

Peoples Democratic Party MP Muzaffar Hussain Baig expressed disappointment on the reported decision of the Law Department to file an appeal in the High Court against the magistrate’s order.

“The crime was allegedly committed by a police officer, the aggrieved family filed a complaint before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who after prima facie after satisfying herself directed an FIR to be registered against the police officer,” he said.
