Militants kill policeman in J&K’s Pulwama district

Top Hurriyat leaders have been arrested amid speculation about track-two diplomacy being initiated with separatists, as two people including a policeman were killed in violence in the Valley on Saturday.

A police spokesman said head constable Khurshid Ahmad Ganie was killed in militants firing in of Pulwama’s Quil area early in the morning.

“The policeman was leaving his home for duties when gunmen fired at him from a close range,” said the spokesman.

The body of a protester, identified as Shahnawaz Khan, 25, was fished out from Jhelum river in south Kashmir’s Sangam area, fuelling massive protests in the area.

Locals alleged the victim was chased towards the riverside by the security forces’ during protests on Friday.

The CRPF has denied the allegations. Meanwhile, the death toll has reached to 70 in the ongoing violence.

Fresh demonstrations and clashes were reported in parts of Baramulla, Bandipora, Pulwama, Kupwara, Kulgam and Shopian, in which more than 15 protesters were injured. The police said curfew remained in place in Srinagar city, Anantnag, Pulwama and Pampore towns as the normal life remained out of gear for 50th day.
