Giving impetus to a priority commitment of the Narendra Modi government to cleanse politics of crime, the government will soon write to State governments to expedite and complete trials against lawmakers facing criminal charges.
“If they are clean, they will be acquitted. If they are not, law will take its own course,” Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad told reporters on Monday.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by Mr. Prasad, top Home and Law Ministry officials and Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi. This comes shortly after a Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha said the government should frame guidelines to prevent “rampant criminalisation of politics.”
