The target of inter-linking of rivers can be achieved in 10 years, Minister for Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti told Lok Sabha on Thursday. This will strengthen the Prime Minister’s Gram Sinchai Yojna, she added.

Responding to supplementaries in Lok Sabha on a question relating to inter-linking of rivers, Ms. Bharti said only those states that agree to inter-linking will be included in the programme. There is opposition to at least four links proposed by the Centre.

“This programme will not be implemented in the States that are opposing it. The government will proceed only after taking consent of the states and keeping environmental concerns in mind. Unfettered river flows shall be the consideration,” the Minister said.
