Northeast monsoon sets in; heavy rains predicted

The northeast monsoon has set in over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. On Saturday, the Meteorological Department formally announced the onset of the monsoon.

Most places of the State experienced rainfall and some parts recorded heavy spell. During the 24-hour-period that ended at 8-30 a.m. on Saturday, the highest rainfall of 18 cm was registered by an observatory at the office of the Director General of Police here. Nungambakkam received 16 cm and Papanasam, Puducherry, Sirkali and Parangipettai 13 cm each.

Meanwhile, two persons were killed in rain-related incidents in Chennai and Tuticorin. A middle-aged autorickshaw driver was electrocuted in Chennai, while in Tuticorin a 60-year-old person was killed in a wall collapse. A weather bulletin stated that rain or thundershowers would continue in most places of the State and in Puducherry on Sunday.
