A 16-year-old girl, an intermediate first year student of a town-based private junior college, was found hanging in her hostel room here on Friday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Sandhya Rani, 16, a native of Mittapalli village in Thallada mandal of the district.

She is suspected to have committed suicide by hanging self to death in her room in the college hostel in the wee hours of the day.

The exact motive behind the alleged suicide could not be established immediately.

The incident sparked protests by activists of SFI, PDSU and other student unions who staged a demonstration near the Collectorate demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.

The demonstrators also sought a detailed probe into the alleged suicide of another student of the same college here last year.
