This district could well be the number one in the drive against corruption. Read otherwise, with the record number of traps by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Karimnagar could also be called having the most corrupt bureaucrats. ACB sleuths have so far caught 38 officials on charges of accepting bribes this year. Deputy Superintendent T. Sudarshan Goud who heads the anti-corruption raids spoke to K.M. DAYASHANKAR in an interview.

How do you see the ACB’s performance in the Karimnagar zone (Karimnagar and Adilabad districts)?

We created history by trapping many corrupt officials. We instilled confidence among people by organising these trap immediately [on receipt of a complaint], and also returning the bribe amount within two months of the trap to the complainant.

People here feel the Revenue Department is more corrupt.

The Revenue Department deals with welfare schemes. People who have genuine problems suffer when officials do not respond. Those who are unable to bribe officials are approaching us and we catch them [the officials] red-handed. Interestingly, the lower-rung staff say they take bribes to pay monthly mamools to higher-ups like deputy tehsildars, tehsildars and RDOs.

Which other departments are corrupt?

There is huge corruption in commercial taxes, transport, medical, mines and geology and other departments. But, people are not complaining against officials are these departments. These officials collude with private persons and siphon off money due to the government.

How do you intend to check this problem?

Firstly, we focus on employees who own properties disproportionate to their known sources of income. We also want people to approach us against such officials. We will not disclose their [complainant’s] identity. Complaints can be emailed to acbknr@gmail.com.

What is the conviction rate in such cases?

It is around 75 per cent. We have an officer exclusively monitoring course cases and coordinate with witnesses. A special ACB court is also being set up in Karimnagar. This would obviate the need to travel to Hyderabad.
