Uma Bharati, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister for Water Resources, on Monday called for a meeting between elders of the Hindu and Muslim communities to go into the controversial issue of ‘love jihad.’

Declining to give her views on the issue, she said it required in-depth examination. “I am neither for it nor against it. Elders of the two communities must sit together and find a solution to the issue. There is a need to ensure that the future of boys and girls of either community is not jeopardised in any way.”

Addressing a press conference, she took objections to reports in a section of media on criminal cases pending against her and said they were intended to merely malign her and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
