Former Union Minister and Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said he was sure that Telangana would become a separate state soon and the rulers should then focus on agricultural development and not on industry.
Dr. Swamy who was here to deliver a lecture at Kakatiya University was answering a series of questions posed by the audience. In response to a question on feasibility of smaller States, he said smaller the State, the better. There was the concept of Janapada in olden days which envisaged smaller areas for administration and delegation of powers for better development. Newly created States such as Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and others had prospered after they were made separate entities, he pointed out.
Hailing former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao as the architect of the Indian economy, he said Mr. Rao deserved Bharat Ratna for his services to the country and said he was sure one day this country would confer the award on Rao which was due to him. “Mr. Rao bravely brought in de-regulation which paved way for the economic boom. Unfortunately, he could not market his work. But, he deserves all the credit,” Dr. Swamy said.
Dr. Swamy described current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a person of integrity and efficiency who teamed up with P. V. Narasimha Rao and led the country to globalisation.
Dr. Swamy urged the younger generation not to attach any importance to caste which had become irrelevant and instead stand united to make India a superpower.
He exhorted the students to be prepared to take calculated risks to become winners.
