Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church George Alencherry has been raised as a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. The investiture will take place in Rome on February 18. The announcement of the raising of the Major Archbishop came at the St. Thomas Mount, on the outskirts of Kochi, which is the headquarters of the Syro-Malabar Church. Bosco Puthur, Curia Bishop, made the announcement in the presence of a large gathering of priests and nuns.

Mar Alencherry said that his being raised as a Cardinal was a recognition given to the Indian and the Syro-Malabar Church, which had its presence all over India now. He recalled the examples set by his predecessors Cardinals Joseph Parekkattil, Antoney Padiyara and Varkey Vithayathil.
