Death of three in mishap leaves pall of gloom over Pookode

Pookode near Koothuparamba here was gripped by sorrow after the report came in of the death of three people of a family there in a road accident at Udumalpet near Pollachi in Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Tuesday.

The area plunged into gloom as the news of the death of a woman, her son and grandson reached there in the morning. The deceased have been identified as retired schoolteacher Rugmini Amma (62), her son Manoj (45) and her grand son Shibin Raj (22).

Large number of local people assembled near their house ‘Chandrakanta’ near the bus stop at Pookode after the report came in. The house remained closed. Among those who reached the area was Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan. Manoj was a trader in Gonikkuppa in Karnataka, while Shibin Raj, a B.Tech graduate, was waiting for admission for M.Tech course.

According to the reports reaching here, the family comprising 11 members had been on a trip to Palani and Kodaikanal in a newly-bought jeep. The accident was believed to have occurred at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Eight other members of the family were injured in the accident and admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore, according to reports.

They are Beena, who is wife of the deceased Manoj, their children Kannan and Nandana, Rugmini Amma’s youngest son Vinod, his wife Seena, their children Sreelakshmi and Sreeraj, and Sinsi, who is sister of Shibin Raj. The condition of Sinsi and Sreeraj is said to be serious.

The family had left for the trip for praying in temples and sight-seeing and in the new vehicle late night on April 9. According to the reports, the jeep lost control and overturned after it skidded off the road at around 3 a.m. Close relatives and some neighbours have rushed to Pollachi following the tragic news.
