Narine undergoes testing in Chennai

April 26, 2015 02:38 am | Updated 02:38 am IST - Chennai:

Kolkata Knight Riders off-spinner Sunil Narine underwent tests for a suspected illegal bowling action at the biomechanical wing of the Sri Ramachandra Sports Medicine Centre here on Saturday.

According to sources, Narine was accompanied by Pakistani pace bowling great and Knight Riders’ bowling consultant Wasim Akram. Bio-mechanical experts and BCCI coaches conducted the tests.

Narine sent down a variety of deliveries. Among them were the faster one and the carrom ball, which have raised several eyebrows. The test results should take a minimum of three days to come out.

According to the IPL rules, a bowler should undergo testing soon after being reported by the umpires. The ICC rules are different since a bowler is given as many as 21 days.

Narine can continue bowling till the results are out, but Knight Riders are unlikely to risk the West Indian bowler in Sunday’s match at the Eden Gardens against Rajasthan Royals.

The Kolkata side then plays Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Tuesday. Interestingly, it was at the same bio-mechanical centre in Chennai that the 26-year-old Trinidadian was cleared to bowl ahead of this edition of the IPL.

Narine had run into serious problems with his action when he was called in back-to-back matches of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament last year.

The West Indian then worked on a new action under former Pakistani great Saqlain Mushtaq. Opting out of the World Cup, he then successfully cleared tests at the ICC-accredited centres in Loughborough and Chennai.
