Team Pune picked Churchill Brothers midfielder Lenny Rodrigues and defender Dharmaraj Ravanan first up in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2014 players’ draft here on Tuesday.

The franchise had got the first crack, as per draw of lots, at the 84-player list. 42 were chosen on the first day and the draft for the remaining 42 will be held on July 23, while the foreigners would be drafted in at a later date.

Six franchises, except Team Goa and North-East United FC, took part. These two franchises that have retained 14 players from their respective I-League squads were asked to list their names. The six franchises that took part chose seven players each.

Team Mumbai bagged the only Europe-based footballer in the draft list by choosing India goalkeeper Subrata Paul. The 27-year-old had trained for six months with Denmark club FC Vestsjaelland. India defender Syed Rahim Nabi was also chosen by the franchise.

Paul and Nabi are among the highest-paid players in the HISL, listed in the Rs. 80 lakh bracket, besides 33 per cent of the loan fee due to him. Both players are in free transfer list (contracted to promoter IMG-R) and will be loaned to I-League clubs subsequently.

India’s central defender Gouramangi Singh, the third player in Rs 80 lakh plus loan percentage group, was picked up by Team Bengaluru. That franchise was also successful in getting striker Jeje Lalpekhlua.

According to information from the promoter, there is no upper limit on each franchise about signing players in the second draft.

The money to be paid to each footballer included in the list is decided by IMG-R.
