Hockey World League: India takes on Thailand in women’s Round 2 semi final

India, Malaysia, Poland and Thailand entered the final four of the women’s Hockey World League (HWL) Round 2 here after winning their respective quarter-finals at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

Striker Vandana Katariya took her tally to 10 from four matches with a four-goal haul as home favourites India booked their place in the semi-finals with a win against Singapore on Thursday.

India’s opponents in the last four on Saturday will be Thailand, who claimed a stunning 4-3 victory over a Kazakhstan.

The other semi-final will be contested between Poland and Malaysia. Goals from Oriana Walasek, Natalia Wisniewska, captain Marlena Rybacha and Magdalena Zagajska earned Poland a 4-2 win over higher-ranked Russia while Malaysia overcame a strong challenge from Ghana to emerge 2-0 winners thanks to strikes from Norazlin Sumantri and Hanis Onn.

Along with the semis, Saturday’s action will feature the 5-8 classification matches with Singapore squaring up against Kazakhstan before Russia face Ghana.
