The Indian men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy scored an upset win, while the women’s doubles duo of G. Jwala and Ashwini Ponappa registered a hard-fought victory, to progress to the second round of the All England Open badminton championships here on Wednesday.
The unseeded pair of Manu and Sumeeth came back from a game down to upset the seventh-seeded Chinese duo of Chai Biao and Hong Wei 9-21, 21-17, 21-17.
The Indian pair will next play the winner of the match between Indonesians Gideon Markus Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Germany’s Max Schwenger and Josche Zurwonne in the second round.
Jwala and Ashwini had to sweat it out to register a 21-12, 2-22, 21-14 win over the Malaysian pair of Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Fie Cho Soong in a first round encounter.
