Chief coach P. Gopi Chand’s success mantra for the Indian shuttlers who have made it to Rio is pretty simple — go with a clear mind, stay focused, maintain a healthy body and seize the chance with both hands.

With six Rio-bound players going through the grind at his academies here, Gopi took time off to share his thoughts on India’s prospects.

“As far as the training programmes are concerned, they are spot on.

“Each one of them is really putting in a lot of hard work,” said the 42-year-old.

“They are all very focused and working on a lot of things to get the desired results. Those who are making their debut are experienced enough to handle the pressures of such an event.

“I would advise the squad to stay away from all distractions including social networking sites during the Olympics. They can be a major hindrance in staying focused, especially if you are trying to share your ‘moments’ on these sites,” said the former All England champion.

‘Momentum is important’

“Momentum is very important. In the last week before our departure, we will work on the strategies since the draw has come out.

“The draw is pretty good from an Indian perspective except for Sindhu, who has her task cut out. In the Olympics or for that matter in any event, you can’t choose your opponents.

“I have seen strange things happen, like in the last Olympics where the top seed in doubles was knocked out,” explained Gopi.

“Yes, the draw helps us prepare accordingly and with better focus.

“As a coach, this Olympics is different for me as we have a few players who are real medal prospects.

“I must mention the immense contribution of physio Kiran who has been with us for the last seven years,” Gopi said.
