Heart-break for Sumedh

Sumedh Kumar missed the gold on the last shot by 0.4 point to Russia’s Evgeniu Borovoi in free pistol in the ISSF Junior Cup shooting championship in Suhl, Germany, on Monday.

The 19-year-old Sumedh, who had topped the qualification with a score of 558, was tied with the Russian before the last two shots on 165.3, as he bridged a gap of about four points along the way. With a penultimate shot of 10.7, Sumedh led by 1.3 pints, but delivered an 8.1 on the last shot, to 9.8 by the Russian, in dropping the gold from his grasp.

Shivam Shukla (566), Achal Pratap Grewal (552) and Rushiraj Barot (551) won the 25-metre rapid fire pistol silver for India.

The Indian team missed another silver, by 1.1 point to Switzerland, in the junior men air rifle event, as Akhil Sheoran was docked two points for an unsuccessful protest.

In junior women air rifle, former National champion Mampi Das shot 412.3 and missed the final by 1.1 point.
