National sub-junior championship from today

Altogether 650 players from 53 teams will be seen in action in the 37th National sub-junior volleyball championship, starting at the Ajmal Khan Park, Karol Bagh, here on Friday.

Delhi boys will take on Andhra Pradesh in Pool B in the inaugural match. In another important engagement on the opening day, defending girls’ champion Gujarat will meet Telangana in Pool A. Tamil Nadu, the title holder in boys section, will begin its campaign in a Pool A match against Maharashtra on Saturday.

According to Saurabh Suden, the president of the organising committee, this is the first such event to be hosted in the National capital in the last 30 years. “We have prepared six clay courts. Additionally, we have booked a few courts in nearby schools,” he said.

Twenty-eight teams will be in fray in the boys’ section, while 25 will be in action in girls’ competition.

The championship will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis with the top two teams in each of the four groups qualifying for the quarterfinals.

The knockout matches will start on Tuesday evening and the final will be held on eve of the New Year.
